Inclusive leadership definition
In today's workplace, inclusive leadership is becoming a recognised and essential component of business expansion. A leader that practices inclusive leadership values their team members, welcomes different viewpoints, and fosters an environment where employees believe their ideas and contributions enhance the success of the organisation.
Further defining inclusive leadership, American psychologist Daniel Goleman makes two important claims in his now classic HRB piece, "What Makes a Leader?" First, strong emotional intelligence (EQ) is a trait shared by all successful leaders; second, emotionally intelligent leaders cannot exist without empathy.
In addition to this, Deloitte further defines the following key traits of inclusive leadership:
- Treating people and groups fairly—that is, based on their unique characteristics, rather than on stereotypes
- Personalising individuals—that is, understanding and valuing the uniqueness of diverse others while also accepting them as members of the group
- Leveraging the thinking of diverse groups for smarter ideation and decision-making that reduces the risk of being blindsided.
Real-world context
- Employee engagement: Since people are more inclined to be invested in their job when they feel appreciated and included, inclusive leadership promotes employee engagement. Better business outcomes and more productivity may result from this. According to research by Deloitte, employees led by an inclusive leadership experience up to 70% increase in individual feelings of inclusion.
- Talent development: Because inclusive leadership encourages employees to share knowledge and build new skills, it also promotes personal growth and development. This may result in more self-assurance and a stronger feeling of purpose at work. To put it briefly, inclusive leadership has the power to maximise each worker's potential and foster a more harmonious and effective work environment. Organisations can gain a more enthusiastic, innovative, and devoted workforce by embracing diversity and encouraging inclusivity.
- Increased creativity of teams: When individuals with various experiences and viewpoints collaborate, they provide original concepts and solutions. Diverse perspectives are fostered by inclusive leadership, which boosts innovation and creativity, adding to organisational strength.
