Values fit definition

“Values fit” refers to the degree in which an individual's personal values align with their organisation’s fundamental principles, culture, goals and beliefs. To effectively achieve values fit, organisations must ensure that individuals share the same commitment to diversity and inclusion, working to create a shared culture of respect and equity, regardless of background or identity.

Values are encompassed and illustrated in people’s behaviour, how they treat and communicate with others, their motivators, and how they make decisions. Organisations who seek to cultivate positive values fit will consciously seek out individuals who promote diversity, challenge biases and contribute to a supportive and psychologically safe environment.

Real-world context

  • Enhanced collaboration: Values fit promotes a workplace where employees are aligned with the principles of equity, inclusion and respect. In turn, this alignment promotes collaboration as individuals are more likely to appreciate and welcome diverse perspectives. Teams with values fit are more likely to draw upon the unique talents and backgrounds of each member, contributing to more effective problem-solving.

  • Improved employee engagement and retention: Organisations that promote values fit are more likely to experience higher levels of employee engagement and retention. When employees feel their personal values align with those of their employer, they are more likely to feel motivated and satisfied at work, thereby reducing staff turnover rates and contributing to a progressive and stable workforce.

  • Strong organisational culture: Values fit plays an important role in shaping the overall organisational culture and environment. Positive values fit can contribute to a supportive and inclusive workplace, cultivating a sense of belonging and psychological safety where employees feel respected, valued and safe.
