Let’s talk about racism at work

The move towards race inclusive workplaces has stalled. Few companies have systematic and coherent action plans for addressing the inherit and institutional barriers that many minority ethnic groups face, both in terms of accessing meaningful employment and in developing their talent.

Any starting point to developing a coherent approach to race inclusion is awareness of the key issues that underrepresented ethnic communities face, both inside and outside of the work environment.

What does our training on racism at work involve?

Drawing on research from social psychology and behavioural science our Let’s talk about racism at work programme introduces managers and colleagues to a number of key themes, including:

  • Defining what we mean by modern day racism and setting out the 3 different types of racial prejudice – from overt racism to systemic racism in the workplace
  • Providing a brief history of race relations in the UK and beyond
  • Providing an overview of how race-based micro-inequities impact ethnic minority individuals – both in society at large and in the workplace, and the impact of these on individual wellbeing and performance at work
  • Providing an overview of the concept of “white privilege” and how this leads to advantage for some groups and disadvantage and discrimination for others
  • Providing colleagues with an opportunity to explore how race inequity plays out in your organisation by sharing and exploring the experiences of non-white colleagues
  • Learning how to move from a “colour blind” approach to a “colour brave” framework.
