FAIRER Consulting paired up with Balfour Beatty to develop and implement an inclusive leadership training programme, and a ‘Respect’ programme to initiate behavioural and cultural change.
Watch the video of Alpa Kapasi, equality, diversity & inclusion manager at Balfour Beatty, who shares her experience of working with us, explaining how trust, open communication and innovation were key to collaborative success.
The challenge
Balfour Beatty asked FAIRER Consulting to help with changing the behaviours and culture within its organisation. We were asked to:
- Develop a programme to enact cultural change
- Increase engagement across multiple stakeholders
- Develop an innovative solution to address inappropriate behaviours in the workplace
- Deliver inclusive leadership training
What we did
- Developed a ‘Respect’ training programme, an initiative designed to affect behavioural and cultural change within Balfour Beatty. The programme aims to create an inclusive work environment by addressing inappropriate behaviours and setting an expectation for what respectful conduct looks like.
As part of this programme, we developed a bespoke digital tool, which uses video-based scenarios that demonstrates how to call out inappropriate behaviours. The programme was delivered across Balfour Beatty’s supply chain of 25 companies.
“The impact of this is huge because all of those people that will undergo this training will then take that back into their companies, into the sector, into the industry, and then you have that ripple effect where actually you're making a difference right across the industry”, says Alpa. - Developed an inclusive leadership training programme, which FAIRER Consulting has been delivering for the last four years. Speaking on the collaboration with FAIRER, Alpa says: “The programme has grown and mushroomed over that period of time. And so, we've built up a really close relationship where they've got to understand our organisation, our project, our culture, the way we work.”
The impact
Through delivering repeated training over a long-term period, our partnership with Balfour Beatty allowed us to:
- build strong relationships
- broaden our reach for industry-wide impact
- and create an impactful programme towards workplace inclusivity.
Alpa shares the importance of difficult conversations, transparency and long-term commitment when it comes to partnerships. “There are lots of diversity and inclusion consultancies out there,” she says, “But actually with FAIRER, I think what I really valued is the trust, the openness, the ability to then jointly buy into that vision and say, ‘how do we jointly achieve that goal? How do we get to get to that point?’ And I think that for me is invaluable.”
