Attracting and retaining diverse talent
Home / Case studies / Transportation
FAIRER Consulting was engaged by a Transport business address diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) challenges within their fleet services including attracting and retaining diverse talent. The training was delivered to 23 managers and 63 multiskilled technicians. The core focus of this programme was to promote a culture of respect and inclusion through an awareness of what appropriate and inappropriate, unacceptable, and discriminatory behaviours at work look and feels like and to ensure all staff understand their responsibilities under their Equality Act 2010.
The challenge
We were asked to deliver a series of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion workshops for all staff in the department through the explicit lens of promoting race inclusion. Some of the challenges faced by the business include:
- Leadership Gaps: The diagnostic phase revealed a significant gap in leadership abilities concerning DE&I issues, particularly around race. Leaders sometimes felt uncomfortable discussing these topics.
- Cultural Challenges: The fleet services’ traditional culture was a barrier to promoting a culture of inclusion for all. Efforts to reach out to under-represented diverse groups had not been successful in the past.
- Trust Issues: Trust was identified as a critical issue, with many employees feeling that the organisation needed to do more to build a culture of inclusion.

Workshops on Conscious Inclusion
We designed and delivered a series of workshops titled “Let’s Talk About Race.” These workshops aimed to create a safe space for employees to share their stories and for leaders to listen and understand the challenges faced by their teams.
Diverse Participation
The workshops included voices from various levels within the organisation, from apprentices to managers, ensuring a broad perspective on the issues at hand.
Feedback and Trust Building
Feedback from the workshops highlighted trust issues within the fleet services. The traditional culture needed to evolve to embrace diversity and inclusion more effectively
Behavioural Change Initiatives
Participants were encouraged to reflect on their behaviours and values, with a focus on making tangible changes in their daily interactions and decision-making processes
The impact
- Increased Openness: The workshops facilitated more open discussions about race and inclusion, helping to break down barriers and build trust.
- Behavioural Changes: Participants began to reflect on their behaviours and make changes to align with the organisation’s values.
- Leadership Development: Leaders gained insights into the challenges faced by their teams and started to develop the skills needed to address DE&I issues more effectively.
- Cultural Shift: Fleet services Division began to undergo a cultural shift, with a greater emphasis on taking personal accountability for behavioural change relating to diversity and inclusion
